ACE ACTION LEADS TO FWIPTV PIRACY SERVICE CEASING OPERATIONS IN THAILAND

March 1, 2021

Thailand – Following a major investigation by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) in support of Thailand’s Department of Special Investigations (DSI), the piracy service FWIPTV has ceased all operations.

Launched in 2012, the FWIPTV service, which includes a website and associated app, offered an unlicensed paid IPTV/VOD service in Thailand and was one of the most popular infringing websites offering SVOD and live streaming in Thailand. FWIPTV carried a premium subscription price of 300 Thai baht per month (approximately US $10) with more than 700,000 views per month. The service offered a wide range of infringing content including large volumes of movies and TV series as well as anime, live sports streaming and adult content. It was also understood to offer newly released camcorded movies. The estimated damages caused by FWIPTV was over 2 billion baht (approximately US $66,727,840).

The Bureau of Technology and Information Inspection Center of the DSI had been investigating FWIPTV, which was also known to be connected with online gambling websites. The DSI received search warrants from the IPIT court for five locations — four in Nonthaburi and one in Nakhon Pathom — and raid operations were executed at these five locations on Feb 4, 2021.

Following the operation, Jan Van Voorn, Executive Vice President & Chief of Global Content Protection, Motion Picture Association, said: “ACE applauds the important work of the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) to stop FWIPTV and its entire criminal enterprise. This is a positive result for the millions of people around the world who work in the film and television industry and an important win for the dynamic legal marketplace for creative content.”
